Mammals

Owning a mammal as a pet can be a truly rewarding experience. They are intelligent and often social creatures, capable of forming strong bonds with their human companions. For many of us a small mammal will be our first experience of caring for another living creature and it often ignites an interest that lasts a lifetime.

A great choice for first-time pet owners

Many species of mammal can be kept as pets, from a traditional pet like a rabbit, hamster or guinea pig or something less common like a sugar glider or jird. Each has its own special character and particular needs, and it’s important that new owners do lots of research before choosing a pet suitable for their circumstances. Small mammals may require less space and work than pets like dogs or cats but will still require daily attention to make sure they are happy and healthy.

Remember, owning the right pet for you is important. Recognising that a species is not the right one for your circumstances is the responsible thing to do and will mean you end up with a happier, healthier pet for its whole life.

Take a mammal test to help you select a suitable mammal pet.

As there is a wealth of information online regarding dogs and cats Pet Know How does not contain any information about these.  Members of the Canine and Feline Sector Group will be able to help you.
